Sharing Smiles

Welcome to the EllaFriends Happiness Tour 2009!

Okay, so there's really only one stop on our tour—right here at the Daily Trumpet—but we're planning to spread as many smiles as we possibly can before we pack up our trunks and go back to our scrap tables.

And speaking of smiles, did you know that SMILES is the longest word in the English language? True story. There's a MILE between the first and last letter. (Ba-dum-bum!)

I was going to have Ella entertain you with a fully choreographed rendition of You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile, but did you know elephants are really bad dancers? Yeah... they have two left feet (and two right ones, too!).

(I'm here all day, folks. Don't forget to tip your waitress.)

Now that I've got your cheek muscles warmed up, the EllaFriends would like to step up the smiles, boost the bliss, and drum up some delight with these fab layouts based on Ella's "I Love Your Smile" contest. Prepare to be inspired, charmed, and maybe even tickled!

patterned paper (Altered Ego by Paislee Press) + staples (Chasing the Sun by Paislee Press) + American Typewriter and Donny's Hand fonts • 12 x 12 digital layout by Noel Culbertson

Patterned paper, word art, heart border (Weeds & Wildflowers Design) + patterned paper (Lynn Grieveson, Percentage Wise) + CKAli's Hand font + digital page by Lain Ehmann

Patterned paper (BasicGrey) + letter stickers (Making Memories, Doodlebug Designs) + chipboard shape (Making Memories) + gems (Robin's Nest) + embroidery floss (unknown source) + 8½x11 layout by Barb Wong

papers from Embrace (Paislee Press + fei-fei's stuff at oscraps.com) + Courier (font) + photo and layout by jodie mcnally

Studio Calico Kit (Yearbook) + Pen (American Crafts Precision Pen) + Punch (Martha Stewart Double Scallop) + 6x12 layout by Monica McNeill

Background paper (Canson) + patterned paper (Cosmo Cricket, Studio Calico) + alphabet stickers (Jenni Bowlin) + brackets (American Crafts) + label sticker (Jenni Bowlin) + happy face token (Studio Calico) + pen (American Crafts) + 12x12 layout by Tami Morrison

And don’t forget to spread some smiles of your own today – if you see someone who doesn’t have one, give them one of yours. :)

I Can't Decide! Please Help!

After agonizing over 60+ fantastic layout submissions based on last week's sketch, we could only narrow it down to ten. (Hence the late-night blog post.) So, we decided to share all the finalists and allow YOU to vote for our winning layouts. Thanks for the suggestion, ScrapperAnn! I'll keep the designers' names secret for now so that you can vote solely on the merits of the layouts. But please don't place your vote based on the quality of the layout scan. We're sure they're all straight and perfect in real life.

To vote, leave a comment that lists nothing more than the number of your vote, and please only vote for one layout. Example: I vote for #11! (Except that there's NOT a #11, so don't vote for it. We didn't want to bias anyone by including a real number in our example.) Deadline for voting: Thursday, October 29 by midnight Eastern time. We'll count them up and pick our eBook contributors based on your votes.

Here's the sketch:

Finalist #1: Sports Day (a very literal version of the sketch)

Finalist #2: Hay Time (very literal translation, two tiny extra photos added)

Finalist #3: Sugar on Snow (four small horizontal photos replaced with four vertical photos, patterned paper added to fill the gap)

Finalist #4: Granddaughters (large vertical photo replaced with horizontal photo and title)

Finalist #5: Pony Boy (four-photo block adapted to fit five photos)

Finalist #6: All-Star Slugger (four-photo block adapted to fit six photos)

Finalist #7: Love Life (two of the small photos replaced by colorful journaling blocks)

Finalist #8: Makin' a Splash (design expanded to an 8½ x 11 spread)

Finalist #9: Sweet Pumpkin (sketch rotated to use one horizontal and four vertical photos)

Finalist #10: KaleidoScoops (sketch rotated to fit one horizontal and four vertical photos)

(Important note: winners, you'll only have one week to complete your eBook assignment after you're chosen, so if that's not enough time for you, we'll pick the layout with the next most votes! In the event of a 10-way tie, the winners will be chosen by the Ella editors, and then we'll wonder why we allowed reader voting in the first place!)

Sketch Contest

I am browsing through dozens of amazing entries as we speak, and this is a HARD decision. Man, you guys are just TOO talented! I'll be back later this evening with the winners, so stay tuned. Eeny, meeny, miney may, which layouts should I choose today? Hmmm...

A Few Reminders

Photo courtesy of Rogue Sun Media.

Remembering the soap is always good -- particularly when you are washing socks, feet, and your kids' soccer uniforms!

But personal hygiene aside, we wanted to remind you of a few upcoming deadlines you won't want to miss:

1. I Love Your Smile! Click here for details on how you can win a basket of Lain's and Stacy's fave goodies. Deadline is this Wednesday at midnight Eastern.

2. Fab friend and Ella author (hereinafter abbreviated to FF&EA) Wendy Smedley is giving away a copy of 20 Simple Secrets of Happy Scrapbookers. Check out her blog for details. Contest ends Tuesday, 10/27, at Noon MST.

3. Renee Pearson, another FF&EA, is hosting an amazing online digital class, Collage 101. It starts November 19, is aimed at intermediate-level digital scrapbookers, and is definitely worth checking out! Class fee starts at $40.

That's the scoop for this week. Come back tomorrow for the announcement of the winning sketches layouts from last week's contest. And later this week we'll have our Ella Friends' take on the I Love Your Smile challenge -- as well as our winners!

Friday Follow-Up

A couple of weeks ago, I challenged you to scrapbook the nicest thing that's been done for you lately (read the blog post here), and I just had to share this sweet submission that came in from Barb Wong:

Isn't it sweet? This is my favorite part of my job: interacting with scrapbookers and readers like you. In fact, I've been having the BEST time working with a brand new author, whose eBook will be out in January!

I'm not going to tell you her name yet, but I'm happy to say that you may not have heard of her, because WE "discovered" her! And how did we discover her? She submitted a great eBook idea through our submissions process, and we're thrilled to give her the chance to be a first-time author! We'll slowly introduce our mystery author to you over the next couple of months. You're going to love her!

In the meantime, make sure you enter both contests announced on our blog this week:

1. Create a layout for this sketch and see if you can get a layout published in an upcoming eBook! (Due Monday.)

2. Enter to win an awesome goody package of Stacy Julian and Lain Ehmann's favorite things, a contest held to celebrate the release of their new eBook, 20 Simple Secrets of Happy Scrapbookers. (Due Wednesday.)

Have a fabulous weekend!

Our Latest Authors!

It is with great pleasure that we introduce our latest set of co-authors, Stacy Julian and Lain Ehmann! Stacy and Lain have put together a smashing selection of scrap-your-way-happy tips in 20 Simple Secrets of Happy Scrapbookers, available only from Ella! We sat down with these two energetic ladies for a little chat.

Ella: We like to start off with an easy question. What did you have for breakfast today?

Stacy: The rest of Taft's Grape Nuts, "warm a double." We microwave Grape Nuts with milk and a double shot of vanilla creamer (so yummy), but Taft almost always prepares way more than he can eat.

Lain: Half a rosemary/olive oil bagel, toasted with peanut butter. I was celebrating!

Ella: You have good reason to celebrate! Your book is adorable. What do you want people to know about it?

Stacy: I think it will make them feel happy!

Lain: That wherever you are in your scrapping journey, and whatever kind of scrapbooker you are, you'll find some wisdom, fun, and inspiration.

Ella: I think you're both in luck! So, When you scrapbook, what products do you HAVE to have?

Stacy: Obviously I need paper and adhesive -- basics like that. But I gravitate towards colorful embellishments that I can group together, like ribbon, buttons, brads, flowers, etc. I'm kind of addicted to American Crafts letter stickers and rub-ons

Lain: I'm also an American Crafts fan! I love their glitter brads. And speaking of glitter, give me a few bottles of Stickles and I'm good to go. That and a journaling pen and I'm all set.

Ella: Time for girl talk. Shopping! What's the last thing you bought online?

Stacy: I've started shopping for my girlfriends for Christmas. Each year I give them a few of my most favorite things. Without divulging details I can say that my last purchase was from Strano Designs (hint: Beautiful ribbon!).

Lain: I usually buy tons of books, but this month I'm on a no-book restriction -- I have too many. So the last thing I bought online was a digital scrapooking collection from Designer Digitals

Ella: You two are busy, with your fingers in lots of different colors of fingerpaints. How do you keep track of it all? Do you have to-do lists?

Stacy: Oh YES! I have a weekly list for BPS and stacyjulian.com in small Russell+Hazel Mini notebooks , which I generally re-write every Monday. I am also using software called Things on my computer and phone to keep daily lists and project planning lists.

Lain: I'm a huge list-maker. I have an ongoing daily list in a mini-notebook I carry with me everywhere. Each day gets its own page, and I try not to add more tasks than fit on one page!

Ella: Finally, what's your must-visit Internet site?

Stacy: I visit bigpicturescrapbooking.com and now stacyjulian.com every day. And then there are sites like Shutterfly, flickr, and YouTube. And it seems like I'm always looking something up on apple.com. I follow several blogs, including Seth Godin, Todd Henry, and a new favorite, the Happy Self. Of course, I read scrapbooking blogs, too!

Lain: I'm in the middle of my Layout a Day challenge, so I'm visiting flickr off and on all day long to check in on what everyone's uploading. And I love Parenting Squad, where I write parenting humor. I also read tons of blogs, including the Happiness Project and ProBlogger. Lots of good stuff out there!

Ella: Well, with all you have going on, we're so happy you took the time to chat with us!

Stacy: My pleasure!

Lain: It was fun being interviewed by a pachyderm!

Looking for Talent...

We have exciting news to share!

We are looking for TWO talented Ella readers to feature in an upcoming eBook. That's right, folks, we have two spots available in our January eBook, which is just getting underway, and one of them might have YOUR name on it!

Here's What You Do

1. Create a layout based on this sketch:

2. The sketch is only guiding your placement of photos, title, and journaling. (Sizes: one 4 x 6 vertical photo and four 4 x 3 landscape photos.) As far as accents, patterned paper, and cardstock? Go crazy! Do whatever floats your boat.

3. The goal here is to follow the sketch fairly closely. However, we would be interested to see how you adapt this sketch to include more or fewer photos, IF the topic you're scrapbooking happens to need more or fewer. If you want to use exactly five photos as shown, that's awesome too!

4. Email a photo of your layout to submissions@ellapublishing.com by Sunday, October 25 with "Sketch Contest" as the subject line.

5. The two winning layouts will be posted on the Ella Blog on Tuesday, October 27. And those winners will be given a NEW assignment that pertains to our top-secret January eBook. Are you intrigued?

Get ready, get set, scrapbook!

Creatively Green Winner - and a Page Call!

So glad you all enjoyed our Creatively Green Product Showcase! We have some talented ladies onboard, I must say. :)

The treat jars seemed to be the big hit with our readers, but as many of you said, it's hard to choose!

As far as choosing goes, we've got a winner! Leora (username LHenkin) is the winner of our Creatively Green gift pack! Leora, email us at comments@ellapublishing.com with your full name and shipping address, and we'll forward you on to the good green people at Creatively Green.

*****************

Now... you all weren't busy this weekend, were you? Why, you ask? Because you are going to want to drop everything and create a layout for our November page call... the catch is, it's due on (gasp) Monday. Yes, yes, we're trying to get caught up around here!

In celebration of our latest eBook, 20 Simple Secrets of Happy Scrapbookers (launching next Tuesday, Oct. 20), we're asking you to create a happy page. It could be with your happy colors, with your favorite products, about something that makes you happy, or all of the above! Follow the guidelines for submitting on our submission page, and put "Happy" in the subject line. Don't forget, we'll need 'em by Monday at 12 noon Eastern time.

Want to hear more about this new eBook? Let me tell you, it's a doozy! By none other than Stacy Julian and our very own Lain Ehmann, you KNOW it's going to be chockfull of fun, inspiration, and color.

Later next week we'll be hosting a contest for a basket of some of Stacy's and Lain's fave happy items, so you'll want to make sure to come back to find out how to enter!

Product Showcase: Creatively Green

Here at Ella, we're all in favor of scrapping green. And if you can do that while still creating awesome projects, well, so much the better!

For today's Product Showcase, we've partnered with Creatively Green, the FIRST online store to specialize in eco-friendly scrapbooking and paper art supplies. How cool is that?

Creatively Green provided our talented Ella Friends with a sampling of their latest goodies, and just look what they created.

First off, from the talented Katrina Simeck. She says, "The Halloween Candy Shoppe Embellishment Kit was frightfully fun for these note cards. I wanted to highlight the glitter shapes, so I punched a circle in my patterned background to create a space for them. I added a corrugated punch, then layered the glittered embellishment on top. Simple & cute!"

supplies: cardstock (Bazzill), patterned paper (American Crafts), corrugated punches, ribbon, and glittered shapes (Creatively Green), tools (Fiskars) 5" x 6" notecards by Katrina Simeck

Katrina also created this adorable monogrammed bookmark. "B is for BOOKS! Clay Artz Monograms are perfect for this handcrafted bookmark...so easy to put together. I created a tag-style bookmark from cardstock scraps (thinking green!), and punched the edges for extra detail. I then added a scrap of patterned paper, and adhered the Clay Artz monogram with glue dots. Ready to hit the books!"

supplies: cardstock (Bazzill), patterned paper (October Afternoon), Clay Artz Monogram (Creatively Green), tools (Fiskars) 3" x 8" bookmark by Katrina Simeck

Ella Friend Monica McNeill was overflowing with crafty ideas! She started with treat jars. "I recycled two jelly jars to make treat jars for my son's teachers. The glitter accents in the Halloween Fun Candy Shoppe Embellishment kit were easy to punch with my Crop-A-Dile & added such a cute touch. The variety of ribbons in the kit allowed for a coordinated but unique look," Monica says.

supplies: Jelly Jars + Cardstock (Stampin' Up!) + Apron Lace Border Punch (Fiskars) + Frightful Collection Stamp Set (Little Yellow Bicycle) + Versamark Dazzle + Embossing Powder + Adirondack Dabber + Ribbon (Creatively Green) + Glitter Bat (Creatively Green) + Glitter Pumpkin (Creatively Green) + Sparkles (Creatively Green) + Candy Corn + Treat Jars by Monica McNeill

And then she created a super-cute layout that makes us giggle. "I loved the rich colors in the Clay Artz flowers and they complimented the hues in this picture of my son. This is one of my favorite pictues so I wanted to keep my layout focused on the picture. The flowers helped me add a bit of color and interest," Monica explains.

Supplies: Cardstock + Clay Flowers (Creatively Green) + Traveling Typewriter Font (Dafont) + Patterned Paper (Imaginisce) + Rub-On (Basic Grey) + Date Stamp + Apron Lace Border Punch (Fiskars) + Upper Crest Border Punch (Fiskars) + Scallop Sentiment Border Punch (Fiskars) + 8.5x11 Layout by Monica McNeill

Next up, our digi girl Jodie McNally stepped away from the computer to create these cute projects, a door sign made with the help of her little girl, Lily:

and a goodie bag tag:

"I tried to keep with the whole 'Creatively Green' theme and recycle some items for use on the Boo to you! sign," says Jodie. "I used a piece from a packing box and covered it with a little scrap of my nephew's birthday wrapping paper.  All of the other pieces are from the Happy Halloween kit I got from Creatively Green.  Lily drew faces on the little clay pieces with a Sharpie. I stuck it all together with some two-sided foam tape I had lying around the house. The goody bag is for Lily's class.  We got the bags at Wal-Mart and the little tag is made from all Creatively Green stuff."

Angie Lucas is our next featured designer. She created a fun layout for her annual Christmas card album. "Using the cute Christmas clay accents from Creatively Green, I decorated a 7 x 7 mini scrapbook page that features my family Christmas card from 2007. This goes in an album I created a couple of years ago using manila envelopes. I put my family's Christmas card on the outside of the manila envelope and slip the favorite cards that I received that year into the envelope for safe keeping. The clay accents were perfect for this because they're slightly flexible and lightweight, so they'll stay put even when this album is handled!" Angie says.

Supplies: clay accents (Creatively Green) + patterned paper (Bella Blvd) + decorative border (Bazzill) + circle punch (Fiskars) + 7 x 7 layout by Angie Lucas

As if that weren't enough, she then turned her boundless creativity to cards... Angie says, "I created two greeting cards that were inspired by the Creatively Green "Music of the Night" accent pack. I found that the easiest way to adhere the clay accents (the glittery music note and heart) are with thin Glue Dots. The cards were fun and easy to create, and I can't wait to find a reason to give them away!"

Take Note card
Supplies: glittery music note, silver ribbon (Creatively Green) + tiny letter stickers (Making Memories) + patterned paper + cardstock + scallop scissors + circle punch (Fiskars) + 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 card by Angie Lucas

Keys to my Heart card
Supplies: cardstock + piano keys brad, glittery heart (Creatively Green) + patterned paper + scalloped heart punch (Fiskars) + letter stickers (Sweetwater) + 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 card by Angie Lucas

Last but NEVER least, our adorable Katie Scott enlisted the help of her little one, Allison, to help out with the creation of some seasonal goodies. This Halloween layout was definitely a joint effort, Katie says! " Allison colored the transparencies with Sharpies, and she actually did the placement of the items in the lime green rectangle - including the circles. I was going to just put the four circles in a line but she insisted on adding the sparkly pumpkin in there. I think it's very cute." Cute, indeed!
For this November gratitude mini-book, Katie added the seasonal embellishments for an eye-catching tag.
Now, do you feel inspired to craft green? If so, we've got a deal for you! Comment on this post telling us your favorite project(s) listed here, and you will be entered to win a pack of Creatively Green goodies! You have until Friday morning, so go to it!

What Have You Done For Me Lately?

Today, I'm blogging from far-away Wyoming (Cheyenne, to be exact), where the weather is frightful and the locals blurt out things like "Yep!" loudly when they approve of what's happening on stage. (Well, at least one local did in the rousing Tap Dogs show we attended last night!)

I'm here visiting my friend Elizabeth Dillow (ever heard of her?) with my friend Wendy Smedley (ever heard of her?). Yes, that was an Andy Bernard (from The Office) impersonation gone wrong, and I apologize. Anyway, we're having the best time. We're scrapbooking, chatting, enjoying each other's company, and getting lots of "girl" time. There are six girls alone in the house all day, ranging in age from 2 to 40, so you can imagine the fun Me, Elizabeth, Wendy, Maddie, Gracie, and Bridget are having.

Gracie is on the left, and Maddie is on the right:

When I arrived in my room yesterday, I found this note on my pillow from Maddie:

And this picture (Elmo and an "Elmo bird") awaited me this morning from Gracie:

These sweet gestures got me thinking...what is the nicest thing that's been done for you lately? Or, what's the nicest thing you've done for someone else? Make a scrapbook page about it! If you really do it, please send your layout to submissions@ellapublishing.com with "How Nice" in the subject line so we can appreciate it too (and possibly post it on our blog). One thing we love about scrapbooking is that is one of the best ways we know of appreciating everyday joys.

Happy Tuesday!

p.s. Dark photos were taken with my iPhone and are not representative of my typical photography skills (but almost).

Winner, Winner!

We have a winner for the Feeling Scrappy Sketchapalooza 5 class:

I love sketches! At first I felt like I was cheating by using them. Then I realized you could use them as is or put your own little twist on them. They are especially helpful when I'm not feeling so creative.

Hello Moon!

I feel like it's my moral duty to make sure that you have made the acquaintance of Moon Ko, the cover of our gorgeous Scrapbook Ellaments cover layout for October!

She's hilarious. She answered a whole series of funny questions for us, but you've got to click a couple of times to find the article! We only have so many menu buttons, folks. Menu buttons don't grow on trees, you know.

I mean come on, how gorgeous is this?

And here's the highly amusing journaling:

If this is the first time you've ever seen this layout, you simply must click here to see more of Moon's work and find out what makes her "The Asian Sensation." (Her words.)

In the last few weeks, I've often wondered, but have never asked, if Moon perhaps has a love/hate relationship with this book.

If she's reading, perhaps she'll enlighten us. Thanks for the inspiration, Moon!

Everyone can always use a new friend, right? Well, today we're proud to introduce you to one of our new friends (and one of our favorite sponsors), Feeling Scrappy!

It's perfect for stay-at-home moms, working ladies, and those who just don't like to change out of their jammies!

There's plenty of opportunity to mix and mingle with your classmates. We hear the private classrooms are hopping with questions, answers, inspiration, and intermingling with instructors and fellow students.

Feeling Scrappy has generously donated TWO seats in the upcoming Sketchapalooza. All you have to do is leave us a comment here, telling us how you feel about sketches. Love 'em? Can't scrap without 'em? Never tried them before but willing to give it a go? Do tell!

We'll pick a winner on Friday, 10/9, at noon Eastern. Get your comments in and get ready for Sketchapalooza!

P.S. Not the lucky type? You can sign up for Sketchapalooza, and you can get a special Ella reader discount that was sent out in Tuesday's newsletter. If you're not getting our newsletter, now's a great time to sign up

Who Doesn't Love Happy Mail?

Lain and I both got a happy surprise in the mail last week!

It really is the small and simple things that can put a smile on your face, like the fact that someone far away is thinking of you and cares enough to follow through on a moment of inspiration.

Stacy Julian, one of the busiest and most productive people we know, sent Lain and I each an adorable elephant notebook in the mail, out of the blue. How thoughtful! And it's not like she doesn't have a lot going on in her life, with a recent teaching trip to Japan and the launch of stacyjulian.com! This is a woman who practices what she preaches when it comes to spreading joy and happiness.

We'd like to pay Stacy's kindness forward! We're going to send a bit of "happy mail" to a random blog commenter or two this week. You can comment today, tomorrow, any day this week and we'll browse through the comments, pick someone who seems like they could use some happy mail (which is EVERYONE!) and send out something that will make you smile.

Today's comment topic: if you were in charge of Ella and you could pick our next eBook author and/or topic, who or what would it to be?

Digi Days Recap - and a Winner (or eight)!

Goodness, you all are talented! Everyone who entered had a beautiful page to share. Here are a few that caught our eye:

From strxlr8. Love the drop shadows and layering, as well as the little extra elements. And she got her husband to contribute to the journaling -- way to go, you!

lisataz says she's a digi newbie, but I don't believe her! I think this layout shows the best of digital -- the ability to change up fonts and other textual elements:

From Cammy. How cute is that -- I love how the checkerboard in her design mimics the checkerboard floor!

Here's one from supertwinkle. I'm totally diggin' all the little leaves and confetti-like background. Lots of layers gives the eye more to see.

Createoften is another faker who says she's new to this digi thing. Take a look at this and tell me she hasn't done this a million times before!

Donnaz's photography blew me out of the water:

And finally, this adorable hybrid layout from LisaKisch that made me want to scrap immediately (as well as have another baby immediately, but my husband unfortunately isn't on board with that idea):

WINNER(S):
