Studio Calico: Inspiration Secrets Revealed + a chance to win cool stuff!

For our Wednesday giveaway, we at Ella invited April Foster from Studio Calico to share how she gets her inspiration. Get ready to get inspired by this talented guest blogger!

June 28, 2007 was an important day for us at Studio Calico.  It was the day we, at Studio Calico, launched our first kit, BILLBOARD.  That kit began as many thereafter, with a piece of inspiration from outside the scrapbooking industry.  I believe it was an ad from Blueprint Magazine.  That torn out page is long gone now, but our aspirations at Studio Calico are not.  You see, one of our goals at Studio Calico is and will likely forever be, to deliver inspiration.  After all, our tag line is "Inspiration, Delivered."  How can we possibly deliver inspiration to our customers if we aren't first inspired ourselves?

Another goal has been to provide unique kits using the latest and greatest products, but afford customers the means to use the products in a variety of ways so it doesn't look like the end result of their work all came from the same set of products.  One way we do this is to combine products from lots of different manufacturers.  At times, we've ordered from up to 27 manufacturers, all for one monthly kit!  Also, we like to provide innovative products that challenge scrapbookers to use products outside their comfort zone, or from a style they may not have first been attracted to.  Somehow, seeing a product as part of a whole makes it easier to adopt as your own style than sitting on a shelf all by its lonesome.

Another important date at Studio Calico is January 28, 2008.  That date marked the launch of our first Studio Calico branded stamp (produced in coordination with Fontwerks).  Later that year, we began producing stamps under our own label, and had another co-branding stint with Tinkering Ink when we produced FabRips with our October kit.  But, it wasn't until the January 2009 kit that we really dug our heels into exclusive products.  That kit was inspired by the illustrations in the children's book, "The Incredible Book-Eating Boy" by Oliver Jeffers.

We designed three papers that were featured in the January kit, entitled BIBLIOGRAPHY:

For the layout below, made with the BIBLIOGRAPHY kit, I took inspiration directly from the layout of the book-page featured above:

Since, this kit, over a year has passed, and our members are still talking about this kit.  Even later that year, Lisa Truesdell, used the book as inspiration for a layout she made with Studio Calico's August kit, OVER THE RAINBOW.

I find that some of the most beloved kits are ones that are designed from an inspiration piece.  Another kit that has had similar popularity is February's BAKERS DOZEN kit.  Despite a large increase in quantity, this kit sold out in less than 2 hours.

This kit was inspired by an image I found on the Creature Comforts blog
(side note: this blog is on my RSS feed, so I get EVERYTHING Ez posts.  It's currently my favorite blog outside the scrapbooking industry and was even mentioned on the Today show.  I love those moments when I know about something that's mentioned on TV...just makes me feel so smart!)

I found this image several months before February's kit was designed, saved it, and knew I would use it at some point.  Those doily banners just called out to me.

Which is perhaps the reason they were so literally translated on these papers:

Which were a part of this kit:

Notice how the inspiration piece has strong orange, yellow, and pink tones, but it also has a touch of turquoise, so I definitely wanted to add that.  Another thing I like to do with kits is combine old product with new.  By old, I sometimes mean realllllllllllllllllly old....like a vintage item.  But, I also like to look for products that have been out for awhile that could use a breath of fresh air when combined with new products.  In the BAKER'S DOZEN kit, I included the Simplicity paper by Fancy Pants that was released over a year ago. Scrapbooking years are like dog years, so that paper is ancient!  But, when combined with brand new releases, it's instantly new and exciting again....oh, and very usable!

This layout by Maggie Holmes represents the kit quite well:

Although this post has highlighted kits constructed using an inspiration source, many times our monthly kits are driven by the newest and best products on the market.  I see something (or one of our wonderful design team members sees something) I just HAVE TO HAVE.  Ever had a moment like that?  Then, I'll plan a kit with those items in mind.

Whatever the basis of inspiration, we're committed to staying true to our beliefs and values that are tried and true.
  • We will continue to design exclusive products that you can only get in Studio Calico's monthly kits, but they will never dominate the kits.
  • We love combining products from lots of different sources and we know we don't have the market cornered on great design.
  • We love new releases just as much as you do, which is why we will continue to search for and include fabulous finds in each monthly kit.
  • We're always looking for great ideas from our customers as well, so feel free to let us know what we can do to serve you better, improve our offerings each month, or if you have a design idea you'd like to see in print.

  • We'd be happy to hear from you! To enter our little contest, leave a comment in this post with a suggestion for Studio Calico and you will be entered to WIN THE PATCHWORK KIT shown below. (Contest closes at Midnight Thursday, March 11 MST.) If you have any other comments or suggestions, email April at info@studiocalico.com or visit the Studio Calico blog.

this is wonderful. i can totally see how these kits came about now. love the kits you put together !~
It's so cool to see where April's inspiration comes from and how it transforms into the creation of a kit!!! I just LOVE Baker's Dozen! I've been a huge fan of Studio Calico for a long time and I am inspired every single time I go there!
Love this behind the scenes glimpse! My only suggestion would be a white cardstock add-on--I always run out of it!

Loved reading your story! Your kits are amazing and I'm pretty sure that you are already close to perfect...no recommendations here. I even love how you package your kits! :) Very thankful I can get some SC product locally now!
I would love to see more turquoise. I love that color! Thanks for the insight on how you put the kits together. They are great.
Love to see what inspires other people! Thanks for sharing your story!! The thing I love most about SC kits is that you offer so many different alphas to the kits. I'd love to have some extra white or cream paper packs also!

Valerie, Thanks for the suggestion! We just began offering the MORE VANILLA add-on in the shop, so I hope you like it. And, we'll work on the white for you! April
I love finding out what inspires other people. It help me be more creative when I use kits. I do like to journal so any type of journaling extras would be great in kits!
After checking out Studio Calico on many occasions, I finally signed up for a membership this month. In fact I received my first kit just 2 days ago. I love it and can't wait to sink my teeth into it. So far, I don't have any recommendations. Your picks are great and so inspirational - just what I need right now!
Like many I love to see what inspire others.I have no recommendations though. I think your kits are perfect the way they are.

Gosh, I love seeing how your kits are built through the original inspiration piece. We have lots of Oliver Jeffers books here--such a cool illustration style. I'd love, love to see a kit inspired by A River of Words, which is a children's book written by Jen Bryant and illustrated by one of my favorites, Melissa Sweet. It was a Caldecott Honor book in 2008, and is right up your alley : )

Elizabeth! I can't believe that suggestion. It already found it's way into my cart on Amazon and will be shipping in 3-5 days ;) Thanks so much! It is right up my alley

ooh. ooh. I am so excited. Can I perch in the corner of your office and watch your process from the time you get it until the kit ships? ; )
I'm in love with everything Studio Calico. I only just joined but I'm already completely addicted. If I had a suggestion it would be to offer a second chance when a month's kit does really well. For example, I'd love to get my hands on Bibliography. I suspect that alot of folks would jump at the chance to grab that a second time. I know sometimes the stuff just isn't available but if it is.....(here's hoping :D)

Ursula, thanks for your suggestion. We would love to offer a kit a second time, but the main barrier to that is product availability. Whether it's new product or a year old, sometimes the manufacturer only produces a certain amount and that's it. But, I love your idea, so maybe instead of re-creating the exact same kit, we could be inspired by the same inspiration piece all over again.
Loved hearing about all of this inspiration. My latest inspiration source is a book entitled "etcetera" by Sibella Court - check it out!
I loved the story of your inspiration. And I love everything about Studio Calico!! The kits are quite perfect actually, even when I initially don't "see" it I end up loving them!! My only suggestion would be to add some more options to the gallery. It is so fun to see the amazing thing other members do with the kits. Search engines, topic selections etc.
Love to learn the creative process behind those kits... I'll have to put the Creature Comforts blog in mmy reading list...
a suggestion for studio calico?! but yall are already so stinkin wonderful! i only wish i had the money to purchase them :P
oh, Studio Calico, how I love thee... Seriously, SC is the ONLY kit I have ever subscribed to (though not the only one I've ever tried) and I've been with them, mostly as a subscriber, since 2007. They are unmatched in customer service, and the product they give us is consistently awesome. I love that they take suggestions from members - they REALLY do. Lately, I have noticed that certain add-ons are designed by the DT members, and I am always interested to see what they come up with. Other than "more of that" I can't think of any way to improve SC. They're darn near perfect, in my opinion. ;-) (incidentally, i would LOVE to win this project kit!)
I love seeing a glimpse into putting a kit together. I can't imaging scrapping without my SC kit. I'd love to see kit with a vintage car/travel theme. I think that woould be fun for travel photos and photos of my husband from high school.
Studio Calico is the only kit company I have ever done business with. It is terrific, as is their site. I have no suggestions for improvements, it's all good!!!!!
Great post - I am always curious where people draw their inspiration from - especially since I've been challenged lately and feeling like everything looks the same. I'm an SC kit subscriber of 2 months - the kits are amazing and definitely inspire on their own. Since I find everything Studio Calico related close to perfection, my only wish is that I had an easier time getting some of the add on kits. Otherwise, keep up the excellent job - the kits, the website and the design team galleries are fantastic!

I really enjoyed this post, finding out where the inspiration comes from is insightful. SC is great just the way it is. If forced to provide a suggestion I have two ideas. One: I think it would be great if SC shared "the story" behind each kit either on their site, blog, or included with each kit. That post/page could also include creative ideas/tips about ways the products might be used. Two: Include a fabric add on each month. Much love to SC!
Although I have been a fan of the Studio Calico kits from the very beginning, I just subscribed this past January. Every month I have been so inspired by not only the kits, but the design team and other members too! Thank you :)
I have loved every kit that SC has sent me. I would love to see another vacation kit. I have a ton of california pictures from two 10 day trips pack full of activities.

    coming summer 2010 ;)
I love the inspiration ideas, I don't have any suggestions for Studio Calico either, I love the style--it inspires me to create! THANK YOU!!
So odd to find this today, as I was "spreading" out my kit for this month, I wondered how, just how....they come up with a totally differant but still awe inspiring kit... Like magic here is this super fun article!! SC could only get better in one small way but, then again it inspires a certain thrill to try again the next month!! Yes--MORE. SC is about as close to perfect as perfect could get for soo many reasons. Why fix something that isn't broken!! Everything from the Design Team (I think one of the BEST)that puts you in awe EVERY month.....to the fun blog and sunday sketch's. The website it's self couldn't be freindlier!! Ooh man you got me going, I just thinks its the BEST!!
Well, i'm a Studio Calico Subscriber and i stalk my Fed Ex man while i'm waiting for my kit to arrive. He tells me not many people are as happy as i am when he delivers me my monthly kit :) So really...no suggestions here. Apparently i'm quite happy with my kit and i love their gallery! SOOOO much inspiration in there, and i looove their designers. Great article.
